1987 Race 24/29
Sunday, September 27, 1987

Fast facts:
Winner: Darrell Waltrip
Most laps led: Dale Earnhardt (170 – 34%)

Race notes:
  • Geoff Bodine led the first stint from pole – including through a yellow on lap eight for debris
  • Dale Earnhardt had a flat tire early, this put him multiple laps down
    • Earnhardt won nearly half of 1987 race to this point (11/23) including the six races on tracks shorter than one mile – he was the favorite coming in
  • On lap 79, a turn 3 lapped traffic pileup collected Bodine from the lead essentially ending his day
    • Richard Petty was among those in the crash
  • Darrell Waltrip and Terry Labonte led after the restart – Earnhardt put himself back on the lead lap
  • On lap 164, Rusty Wallace’s engine expired
    • This yellow allowed Earnhardt to cycle back around
  • Terry Labonte, Darrell Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt led from the restart
    • The three would trade the lead through the remainder of the race
  • There was a yellow flag with six laps to go for a Schrader/Allison incident
  • The yellow set up a three lap three car battle between Waltrip, Earnhardt, and Labonte
  • Labonte attempted to pass the leading Earnhardt on the outside in one and two on the final lap, Earnhardt drifted up to block. This move let Waltrip get to the inside on the backstretch. Labonte tried to chop Waltrip’s nose entering three and wasn’t clear – Labonte’s car was now out of control, took out leader Earnhardt, handing the win to Waltrip
    • NASCAR reviewed film but did not take disciplinary action – The San Bernardino County Sun – Sep 28, 1987
  • This was Waltrip’s first win driving for Rick Hendrick
